We’ve always seen those signboards about being safe on the roads. But last Sunday saw an awareness drive of a different kind.

The women of Bengaluru, with their friends, donned their driving gloves, put on their coolest jackets and drove from the city to Nandi Hills and back, for a good cause.

Driven, a women’s rally, saw over 250 women drivers take to the roads to drive home some valid issues.

In its second edition, Driven was organised to spread awareness on road safety and empowerment.

“Our first edition made a mark in Bengaluru with over 60 women drivers participating. That became the motivation to broaden our boundaries. This time around 250 women drivers took part making it Bengaluru’s biggest women motor rally,” says Arvind J Sabhaney, the CEO of Zeroin Management Pvt Ltd, that organised the rally.

Sabhaney also spoke about the wide scope for tourism in such initiatives.

Tourist attraction

“Our main objective is to make Driven a tourist attraction for women drivers across the nation. We are trying to reach out with the message of road safety to people and rallies like Driven help in breaking stereotypes about women’s driving skills,” he added.

The rally was flagged off by actor and producer Pooja Gandhi, fitness expert Wanitha Ashok and international rallyist Anitha Kholay from the Bowring Institute.

Speaking about the prospects for a rally of this magnitude, Pooja said: “Driven is a platform to bring together women who love driving. It is an opportunity for them to go out and enjoy fun activities with like-minded women.”

Timely event

Wanitha expressed her views on the importance of conducting a motor rally like Driven in the current scenario: “Women motor rallies showcase the potential women have.

“It is indeed an opportunity to explore our potential and find out what we can do. Driven also reinforces the role of women in spreading awareness on road safety as they are incredibly influential, being mothers, daughters, teachers and friends. They have the capability to enlighten the present generation.”

Driven included exciting tasks for drivers using the tulip chart. The participants drove through scenic stretches of Nandi Hills and concluded the journey at Bowring Institute.

Kamal Mohandas, a designer and participant, said: “I believe women are already empowered. Being part of these rallies gives us confidence to face challenges in life. It is an opportunity to strengthen ourselves.”

Sudha Nammi, another participant said, “The idea of motor rally for women is remarkable. We could make this weekend a special one with our friends.”
