This School In Assam Allows Students To Bring Plastic Waste As Fees!

This eco-friendly school in Assam is paving the path for a brighter future for the nation.

Nestled amidst the lush greenery of the picturesque Pamohi region in Assam, this eco-friendly school is truly unique and has raised the educational standard to a great extent. The reason that makes this school (known as Akshar) stand apart from every other school in the country is that it accepts only plastic waste as the school fees! The most beautiful thing is that the students get to study under a roof made up of bamboo grass, which allows them to connect way better to Mother Nature.

This all started when Mazin (who had come all the way from New York) had teamed with Parmita (a Master’s degree student in Social Work at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) for developing a unique concept that was born out of their common goal to contribute in the educational sector. With the idea of establishing an eco-friendly educational institution, the couple had conducted thorough research on the social landscape and local culture of the Pamohi region. According to them, Akshar is a modernist approach to education that serves as a link between vocational training and conventional academics. Since the majority of the students come from a poor background, Mazin and Parmita had to face many challenges and adversities in order to launch their thoughtful initiative.

This one-of-a-kind school has specially designed a curriculum to cater to the needs of the economically backward class, which includes a variety of vocational courses like embroiderysingingcarpentrycosmetologyorganic farming, and solar panelling gardening. At Akshar, the students learn the importance of recycling waste products and learn more about the sustainable way of living. By allowing them to deposit the plastic waste as their school fees, the school has encouraged them to embrace a healthier and more responsible lifestyle that will certainly go a long way in shaping a world that is waste-free with zero toxicity.
