This fuel station at Burlington crossing in Lucknow is redefining Women Empowerment February 12, 2020 February 12, 2020 / ChangeMaker, Women Empowerment / By SLSV / 1 Comment Fuel stations are such a basic stop for daily commuters, that no one really pays any detailed attention to it.Along similar lines, we were queueing up at the HP petrol pump in Burlington Chauraha when our keen noses caught a whiff of a story- Women Empowerment Redefined! Here at the petrol pump in Burlington Chauraha, just opposite the F. I. Hospital, as soon you reach your turn at the petrol kiosk, you’ll be asked about the amount of fuel you need and your payment methods by none other than a lady amidst the 7 here. Although it’s not the first women-led petrol pump in Lucknow (the second one being at Khargapur) but here’s why it is definitely worth our attention! For financial independence… Upon speaking to the manager of this HP petrol pump, Apurva Bhargava, we got our queries answered and insights into this venture, which many in the city are yet to undertake and normalize- we don’t get to see women taking the fuel hoses in their hands too often but when people do, it’s bound to turn eyeballs and perspectives for the better of course.“My brother’s wife Shikha and I, have been hiring women at this petrol pump for quite sometime now. These women workers are from nearby areas and they work for 6-7 hours daily in different shifts. We believe women are better at this job because they don’t get into petty fights with customers and their poised behaviour, helps to create a sustainable client-customer relationship! Given our past experiences, we believe that women workers are much more responsible than their male counterparts and they do have a strict sense of timeliness, which majorly stems from the roles they play at home.”Further, Shikha added, ” We mostly take in needy women, who are going through troubled times and are in need of financial support. We have women from all walks of life, joining us at the petrol pump- there’s someone whose husband is suffering from a fatal disease, a divorcee fending for her family and many others with different stories yet the same need at the end of the day. So our plan is to make these ladies financially independent which is bound to inculcate a sense of empowerment.” Such an initiative is always welcomed in the city with open hearts but taking the first step, is where many people stumble and fall which puts such ideas and ventures to rest. But for those who crawl again and stand-up ultimately to make it happen, our resounding applause goes out to them! Article Credit: knocksense
