Sustainable development will help bring nomadic tribes into mainstream: Krupa Alwa

Mysuru: Chairperson of the Children’s Rights Protection Committee Krupa Alwa on Wednesday underscored the importance of imbibing humanistic values in one’s life.

Alwa, who inaugurated a discussion on ‘Issues Faced by Children of Nomadic Tribes’ jointly organised by the district administration, zilla panchayat and the department of women and child development at the JSS Law College, said, “To help educate children of nomads and tribals, the government has constructed Ashrama schools. But, when I visited the ashrama school at HD Kote, I saw that most kids did not have access to many facilities. It was sad to see that a few schools were empty and there was no sign of teachers.”

Lamenting that the concept of development was caught up with selfish motives, Krupa said, “There is a need for inclusive development, where even nomads, tribals and their kids can be uplifted. Sustainable development can help bring them into the mainstream.”

Recalling former President APJ Abdul Kalam’s vision of India emerging as a strong nation by 2020, Krupa said, “To what extent have we accomplished this task? While the world is making great progress in technology, there are people who are not aware of these advancements. They do odd things for a living. We need policies that will expedite implementation of government programmes.”

State nodal officer for the department of social welfare Balagurumurthy said, “Every child is equal under the sun. Belonging to nomadic tribes must not entail them getting labeled. Childhood of tribal kids is ghastly. They are ill-treated at schools. Folk artistes from nomadic tribes are considered beggars. The rich folk culture of the tribes is forgotten.”

Y Mariswamy, Anitha H T Kamala, deputy director of the department of Women and Child Development, K Radha, Jerry Payas, M Krishniah, Vaddagere Nagarajaiah were present.
