The term ‘woman driver’ is often used as an insult. But this Sunday, Gurgaon’s women took it upon themselves to bust the myth of women being bad drivers. On Sunday morning,
Gurgaon’s roads were taken over by 50 cars – all driven by women – as the fourth annual Women’s Car Rally was held in the city. The cars were flagged-off from a hotel near HUDA City Centre and they drove through Golf Course Road, MG Road, NH48, and Sohna Road on a route that traversed most of the Millennium City. The message was simple and clear – ‘Women can not only drive, but they can also drive well’.

The rally was organised by local NGO WESS (Women Empowerment, Safety and Security), in association with The Earth Saviours Foundation.
The slogan of the rally was ‘Our safety, our responsibility’, signifying the need for women taking charge of their own empowerment and safety. The cars in the rally also supported the ‘Do Not Honk’ movement and spread the message of fire safety. Veena Gupta, the organiser, said, “We wanted to use the platform to spread positive messages through the participants. All of them are carrying important messages like fire safety and following the traffic rules. The idea behind the rally is not showing off but to show that we can drive within the rules and still have fun.”
Most participants decorated their cars with posters supporting various causes, but there was one lot who decided to decorate the drivers instead of the vehicle. The team of Bhavna, Shikha, Neetu, and Sonia came dressed in military fatigues. ‘We wanted to send the message that women aren’t weak and that they are prepared to fight for their rights and rightful place in the world,” they said.
One of the highlights of the rally was that for the first time, it was led by four female bikers, who acted as the rally marshalls, guiding and escorting the cars along the 35-km route. Jasvinder, one of the four bikers, said, “It is a really great initiative and it is always fun to be a part of anything that showcases the strength of women. It was a joy to see so many confident women behind the wheels today.”
