A seven-year-old girl from Srinagar is on a mission to keep the famous Dal Lake in Srinagar clean. The girl who is identified as Jannat, has been taking out garbage from the lake since she was five. After receiving appreciation from locals, she has now earned a place in a textbook that has been included in the curriculum of a Hyderabad-based school.
“I was inspired by my father to clean the lake. All recognition I am getting is due to my baba,” said Jannat whose video of cleaning the lake took over the internet in 2018. In the video, she can be seen taking a ride in the boat, using fishing nets to clear the dirty water.
Jannat is currently studying in the third standard and without a miss, she has been taking out the garbage – bottles, plastics and other waste, from Dal Lake for the past two years.

On receiving the news that his daughter is now a part of a textbook, beaming with pride, Jannat’s father Tariq Ahmad said, “I got a call from my friend in Hyderabad who said that my daughter’s name has been included in a school textbook. I asked him to send it to me. It was a proud moment for me.”
In the video that went viral two years ago, Jannat can be seen urging everyone to help preserve the beauty of Dal Lake, saying, “Today, I and my father did a little bit of cleaning of the lake. We found a lot of garbage, but just me doing the cleaning of Dal Lake will not be enough. Dal Lake is one of the best things we have, we all should come forward and do our best to preserve its beauty.”
She impressed the Prime Minister
Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself took to Twitter to share the video and encouraged others to work towards preserving the environment. He said the girl is setting an example for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. He wrote, ‘Hearing this little girl will make your morning even better! Great passion towards Swachhata,’.
Jannat’s viral video ends with an equally pertinent message, “Dal Lake is one of the best things we have. It needs to be cleaned, it cannot get polluted. I am urging children to come forward and start cleaning our very own Dal Lake – Dal ko saaf rakhiye (keep the Dal Lake clean).”
