Safari Group has handed over QR100,000 to Qatar Charity (QC) for the life-saving campaign for baby Malkha Roohi, as part of the former’s corporate social responsibility initiative, a statement said.
Safari Group of Companies managing director Shaheen Backer and management representatives handed over the cheque to QC’s customer service director Khalid al-Yafi and CSR head Marwan at Safari Mall yesterday.
As soon as Safari started the campaign for Baby Roohi on May 1, employees of different nationalities and languages came together and offered a day’s wages for the cause. Safari Group also contributed an amount to Baby Roohi’s treatment from their CSR Fund.
Backer, said: “We are incredibly proud of our team members for their tremendous generosity and compassion. May Baby Roohi get well soon and have all the prayers of the Safari family”, he added.
Always actively involved in philanthropic and socio-cultural activities, Safari Group has participated in many philanthropic activities in Qatar, India, and various other countries, the statement added.
Malkha, a four-month Indian national, has been diagnosed with Type 1 Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), an inherited disease that affects nerves and muscles, causing muscles to become increasingly weak.
Daughter of Risal Abdul Rasheed and Nihala Nizam, Malkha is undergoing treatment at Sidra Medicine. Doctors have suggested a gene replacement therapy and certain drugs which, according to Rasheed, are expensive and beyond the family’s reach.
A fundraising drive for QR11.65mn, under the aegis of QC, has raised QR2.78mn as of yesterday. The QC has urged all to donate for the treatment of Malkha.
