The amendment to the Motor Vehicles Act, making it compulsory for girls (rider and pillion) to wear helmet, will help in reducing the road casualties, said Pooja Yadav, who is travelling across the country to create awareness on road safety.
Pooja, who started from Mathura on October 21, reached Shimla today and met police officers and the transport authorities here. “If my campaign makes an impact on even 2 per cent of the bike riders, I will be satisfied,” she said.
A large number of people die in accidents every year and in many cases, it has been observed that pillion riders are grievously hurt and even killed as they are without helmets. Therefore, there is a need to sensitise society about the issue to ensure that the bike riders wear helmets, she says. Pooja, who is associated with an NGO Trak, covered 34 cities in 17 states last year to create awareness on road safety and traffic rules. “With focus on the youth, efforts are being made to educate teachers about road safety,” she says.
In Himachal, the number of bike riders is less as compared to the plains and people are more cautious about safety. In UP, people are casual about their safety and as a result many die.
