Can corporates be enrolled to save our forests?
Though this is the hope with which the Forest Department reaches out to companies and their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds, the expectations far outweigh the rewards so far.
In the two years since companies were requested for CSR funds, only Rs. 35 crore has come in — primarily for camera traps or vehicles — representing a fraction of the Rs. 730 crore ‘wish list’ of the Forest Department. The remoteness of the forests, and the long-term impact of the projects, rather than tangible short-term gains, could be among the reasons for corporates not taking up CSR initiatives in the forests.
