Empowering Rural Women: Success of Swabhiman Mahila Bakery Unit

This is the success story of the Swabhiman Mahila Bakery unit from village Dobri in Vikasnagar Block. The Swabhiman Women’s Bakery is transforming the lives of rural women. Established on 4 July 2024 with the support of the Rural Enterprise Acceleration Project (REAP) and local community participation, this bakery has provided sustainable livelihoods to many.

With an initial investment of Rs 10 lakhs, including contributions from REAP, a bank loan, and SHG members, the bakery aims to make rural women self-reliant through self-employment. The initiative targets women from BPL backgrounds, divorcees, and widows, providing them with essential training and employment opportunities.

Training, led by experienced chef Sajan Bhandari, covers bakery production, packaging, and billing. The bakery ensures high standards by using quality raw materials and maintaining a clean, safe production area. Safety measures include mesh windows, fly catchers, and thorough daily cleaning.

Six women initially received full-time employment. The bakery products are marketed within the cluster of 700 women, local shops, block offices, district headquarters canteens, and exhibitions. Orders are also fulfilled for other states via courier.

The bakery uses bulk purchasing to reduce costs and maintains competitive pricing. Profits are shared among group members, increasing their income and expanding their social network. Training provided by the bakery integrates women into the mainstream economy, enhancing their skills and confidence.

The women overcame initial packaging and product size challenges with REAP’s support. Current challenges include transportation and space constraints. Future plans involve establishing mini outlets, introducing a mobile bakery van, and promoting health-conscious products made from local produce. The long-term vision includes reaching national and international markets.

Supported by REAP, Swabhiman Mahila Bakery has significantly improved the economic condition of women in Vikasnagar. The initiative stands as a testament to the transformative power of community-driven efforts and targeted support.

The Swabhiman Mahila Bakery members express heartfelt gratitude to REAP and all staff members for their unwavering support and encouragement.
