Bharat Dynamics Ltd., the public sector unit under the Ministry of Defence, extended its support to The Akshaya Patra Foundation, the voluntary organisation running the world’s largest school meal programme, for feeding 15,000 school-going children in the regions of Hyderabad (Telangana) and Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) under its corporate social responsibility initiative.
As part of the initiative, BDL has provided ₹ 1,60 crore to the Foundation for feeding the targeted children in the government schools and a memorandum of understanding was signed between both the organisations by BDL’s Head (Pay & Accounts) S. Narayanan in the presence of Deputy GM B. Srinivas, Manager Krishna Vardhan and Rajini Sinha of Akshaya Patra.
The project is for supporting and bringing more underprivileged children to schools for education. Currently, the Foundation is serving mid-day meals in more than 1,105 schools to around 1,10,769 children across five districts of Telangana.
The Foundation serves the largest number of nutritious, freshly-cooked school meals in the country six days of the week and reaches out to 1.6 million children in 36 locations across 12 States of India. BDL has been in fact supporting the project for the last eight years in Medak, which has helped in improvement of enrolment, attendance and attention spans in the classroom besides boosting children’s overall health, a press release said.
