Human activities like mining, oil extraction, use of fossil fuels and deforestation have caused the release of a massive amount of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere making it warmer.
- 16 of the 17 warmest years on record have been in the 21st century.
- Instead of questioning whether climate change is happening or whether is it real, the pertinent question to be asked now is what we can do to soften its impact.
New Delhi: Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing humanity today. This is mainly caused by our actions including increased use of fossil fuels, deforestation and our excessive greed for resources.
According to World Wide Fund (WWF), from 1906 to 2005, the average global temperature rose by 0.74 degrees Celcius. And 16 of the 17 warmest years on record have been in the 21st century.
Now, instead of questioning whether climate change is happening or whether is it real, the pertinent question to be asked now is what we can do to soften its impact.
Keeping in view the challenge posed by climate change, there are a number of steps that an individual can take to help mitigate its impact.
- Limit use of fossil fuels: The burning of fossil fuels like diesel and petrol causes the emission of carbon monoxide which is highly toxic and pollutes the air. Hence, the need of the hour is to replacing fossil fuels with renewable and clean sources of energy, all while increasing energy efficiency.
- Phasing out hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs): The reduction in the use of HFCs (chemicals used in fridges and air conditioning) by industries is also one of the most effective ways to reduce emissions.
- Going car-free: Cars are polluting the air at a faster rate as compared to other means of transportation like walking, biking or using public transport. One can individually contribute to help the environment by avoiding the use of cars unnecessarily.
- Change in dietary habits: The food industry- especially meat and dairy sector- is one of the biggest contributors to climate change as it requires lots of water, fertiliser. You don’t need to go vegetarian to make a difference. Just cut down on your consumption of animal protein.
- Prefer local produce: The export and import of products also contribute to global warming as products are shipped or transported through air cargo around the world. So, the best way is to prefer locally produced items.
