‘Air pollution posing severe health risks’

The increasing air pollution has started to pose severe risks to public health and hence dedicated efforts are required to minimize air pollution and reduce the threat to public health and ecology, said JSS secretary Ajit Prasad. Inaugurating Air Pollution Control Week programme organized by the Regional Transport Office in association with Janata Shikshana Samiti here on Saturday, he said toxic air is choking several cities and there is an urgent need to address the issue failing which the people will find it extremely difficult to breath.

Senior RTO Bheemangouda Patil said that people have to ensure that carbon emission by their two-wheelers and four-wheelers is within the permissible limit.

On the eve of National Pollution Prevention Day, a coalition of medical professionals gathered at a press conference organized by the SwitchON Foundation, with support from various medical associations, including the Association of Chest Physicians West Bengal and the Society of Emergency Medicine of India, West Bengal Chapter. They issued a health advisory addressing the rising air pollution levels in Kolkata, particularly around Victoria and Maidan. The advisory emphasizes the need for awareness and precautionary measures to protect public health. Data shows a 70% surge in the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the specified areas between December 2021 and December 2022, highlighting the urgency to combat the detrimental effects of air pollution.

Early detection is crucial, with advancements like Narrow Band Imaging detecting early-stage throat cancer. Chronic acid reflux also plays a role in throat cancer development. The conference addressed various surgical procedures for airway stenosis, voice disorders, and laryngeal cancer.
