Trichy: The Trichy Corporation on Thursday received four more mini trucks to be put to use for door-to-door waste waste collection across the 65 wards in the city. The vehicles were provided by the Indian Bank regional office here as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.
Already, 140 mini trucks have been deployed by the civic body each day to collect waste at doorsteps from residential localities as well as commercial streets. The corporation also hired a few private mini-trucks for waste collection process. With garbage bins having been removed in more than 70% area of the city, the civic body’s responsibility to ensure door-to-door waste collection has also doubled.
Since the process requires vehicles to collect waste from houses in the absence of public bins, corporation was also open to accepting support from public and private firms through CSR funds.
The Indian Bank management which came to the know the readiness of civic body came forward to finance Rs 21.60 lakh and purchased the four mini trucks. “Minimum three mini trucks are needed to cover a ward. Induction of new vehicles would enhance the existing coverage of door-to-door waste collection,” an official source said.
Adding that quality of source segregation in apartments and gated communities with dozens of housing units has been declining, the civic body said that residents welfare associations in gated communities will be sensitised to segregate the waste before handing it over to corporation workers.
