As foundation Spends N3 Billion On Scholarship Scheme
The MTN Foundation has awarded scholarships to 360 students comprising blind and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students.
The Foundation said that it has invested about N3billion in scholarships for disadvantaged undergraduate students and students with disabilities in Nigeria.
Speaking during the award ceremony at the weekend in Abuja, the MTN Foundation Executive Secretary, Odunayo Sanya, noted that every year, MTN Nigeria, through the foundation, enrolled 360 young Nigerians into the scholarship scheme, adding that till date, the foundation has given about 12,700 scholarships to financially disadvantaged Nigerians.
She noted that the scholarship programme which has been in operation for over a decade, was part of the foundation’s corporate social investment program and contribution to nation building.
Sanya stated that it was a scholarship for excellence and the Foundation wants to ensure that scholars compete at the global space, adding that for the beneficiaries to continue to enjoy the scholarship, they must maintain a minimum standard Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.4. in their respective fields of study until graduation
She added that the Foundation provides platforms and opportunities for their scholars to connect to their aspirations and realize their potentials from which the nation will benefit.
Sanya further stated that MTN Foundation made it a point of duty to have youth development as a pillar, “and one of the ways to express the commitment is through the scholarship.”
She noted that the Foundation identified the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to enable young Nigerians who studied these courses to be able to forge into the university.
“At MTN, we have actually commenced scholarships for the blind students before that of the STEM students. So, every year, MTN Nigeria enables through the Foundation about 360 young Nigerians to get into the scholarships scheme.
“Till date, we have awarded about 12,700 scholarships. When you get MTN scholarship, you are able to get it for three consecutive years until you leave school”, she added
A lso speaking, Director, MTN Foundation, Mrs. Aishatu Sadauki said that the Foundation allocates a specific fund for scholarships aimed at supporting financially disadvantaged undergraduate students, including those with visual impairments and other disabilities.
She reminded them that MTN Foundation would always be there to guide, mentor and support them in their pursuit for excellence.
“To our current scholars, the path you have taken is not an easy one, there will be challenges, my advice is for you to embrace them, strengthen your resilience, be assured that we are here to provide whatever tools, knowledge and support you need to facilitate your study.
“We are also your cheerleaders, excited to witness your journey and so to celebrate with you.
“To the incoming scholars, welcome to the community that believes in your abilities, talent and potentials to achieve greatness. You have embarked on a journey that promises not only knowledge but also transformation.
“As you take your first step with us, remember the famous proverb, ‘if you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together. You are not alone, your family and your other colleagues and all of us at the Foundation are here to guide, mentor, support you in your pursuit for excellence.
“As scholars, incoming, current and outgoing, we believe in your power and ability to become change makers; we believe in our role of empowering you in this quest and I am confident that you will continue to do great things in the future.”
