Bhavesh Bhatia started Sunrise Candles 28 years ago in a Maharashtra town on a handcart.
Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra regularly shares inspiring content on social media. On Wednesday he shared a video about Bhavesh Bhatia, a visually impaired entrepreneur who founded a candle company.
Mahindra wrote that he was embarrassed that he had not heard about him until he came across the clip, in which Rajiv Talreja, a business coach, says that Bhatia started Sunrise Candles 28 years ago in Maharashtra’s Mahabaleshwar town on a handcart.
“Today he has built a business that does Rs 350 crores per annum turnover,” he says in the video. “Today he provides income generation and employment opportunities to 9,700 blind boys and girls.”
“Toh kya Hua ki tum duniya nahin dekh sakte. Kuch aisa karo ki duniya tumhe dekhe.” This has to be one of the most inspiring messages I have ever encountered. I’m embarrassed that I hadn’t heard about Bhavesh until this clip dropped into my inbox. His start-up has the power to motivate entrepreneurship more powerfully than a zillion unicorns… Keep Rising, Bhavesh!” Mahindra posted on X, formerly Twitter.
“Life altering and inspiring message from Bhaveshji’s mother. Bhaveshji is a true hero and role model to many,” commented an X user. “One hope is enough to take one to the destination,” said another.
“Visited his place 2 yrs back. Very empowering, kind person. Still have that Toran of artificial flowers at my entrance door that i bought from there,” wrote a third.
Apart from his business activities, Bhatia has participated in Paralympic games at national and state levels and won medals in disciplines such as javelin throw and shot put.
The official website of Sunrise Candles lists floating candles, gifting candles, scented candles and gel candles and among other products.
A disclaimer on the website says that the “imaginary number” being mentioned as the company’s annual turnover in the video is not accurate. It said Sunrise Candles is not a business but a “yagna” for Bhatia and that the aim is to empower divyang, including blind, hearing-impaired people who have trained at the institute.
