Jeff Bezos is doubling his contribution to statewide Covid-relief efforts, pledging $25 million on top of the $25 million he already donated.
Bezos – Amazon’s founder and CEO and the world’s wealthiest human with a net worth of $187 billion, according to Forbes – is donating the funds to All In WA, a coalition of philanthropic and community leaders that supports workers and families, particularly those of color, who have been severely affected by the the pandemic. The $50 million equals 0.027% of Bezos’ net worth.
Earlier this year, in addition to his $25 million donation, Bezos pledged to match donations to All In WA up to $1 million. In making a second $25 million donation Monday, he again pledged to match donations up to $1 million.
Since its launch in May, All in WA has dispersed more than $70 million. The money has been used to help fill families’ kitchen cupboards, help small businesses recover, house homeless youth and support undocumented families.
All In WA has also launched an effort to address gaps in access to the web and digital devices – an increasingly perilous driver of inequality – and to increase access to childcare.
All in WA has set a new fundraising goal of $100 million to address further needs during the pandemic, which is entering its 10th month and, despite the arrival of a vaccine, is far from over.
