60YO Specially-Abled Man From Gujarat Is Building Electric 2 & 3 Wheelers From Electronic Waste

Pawan Mishra, in his critically acclaimed book Coinman: An Untold Conspiracy, had famously written, “The only thing God is afraid of is a strong-willed human.” Examples of such sheer will power are rarely seen though. Here in India, one man by the name of Vishnu Patel is doing something rather extraordinary.

Aged 60, Patel is a differently-abled person with impaired hearing since birth who has left many automobile engineers in a tizzy. Hailing from Surat, Patel uses e-waste – like discarded mobiles, laptops, TV remotes as well as vehicle parts – to build-battery operated vehicles.

So far, Patel has built seven such battery-operated two and three wheelers, which he likes to call ‘e-bikes’. His creations come with a purpose too – to help the specially-abled. In an interaction with ANI, he said “I want to make three-wheelers for the differently-abled community, using which, they can give their families a ride too.”
Surprisingly, Patel does not have any formal training in electrical or mechanical engineering, neither does the man have any investment for carrying out his projects. It’s through sheer will power that he is creating eco-friendly vehicles with no emissions whatsoever.

As per reports, Patel’s son Nikhil mentions that it takes Patel around a month to manufacture a vehicle. For each of his projects, Patel spends around Rs 25,000 from his pocket, including the salary of his workers. Among all his creations, Patel’s electric bikes stand apart, deemed as the star attraction of the collection.

As for the vehicles, Nikhil mentions, “These battery-operated bikes fulfil our goal of not leaving behind any carbon footprint. By charging them for 2-3 hours, one can easily commute for about 35-45 km.”

Patel’s determination to stand apart with his deeds post his retirement were also reflected in his claim, “If Rs 20 lakh loan is granted to me, I can make a vehicle which will bring laurels to India.”
